THAT MR MAY

Elliot (age 7) has a new school principal. After school conversation with his Gran (Mumma has been working all week):

"That Mr May is the loudest person in the school. That's why he doesn't need a microphone to talk to all the school."

"That Mr May said I did the best sentences about safety in the whole school."

"That Mr May - Laura and and Ben told me how old he is. He's in his nineties, but Laura said he's 92 and Ben said he's 95 so I'm not sure of his exact age."

WHAT SPEAKS TO YOU?

In a recent post Karen talks about songs with an empowerment message. She liked the words "suddenly I see".

Do words from songs ever jump out and speak to you? Some lines or phrases from songs have inspired whole campaigns. Like the "Beautiful Like a Rainbow" song that inspired the Dove campaign and a whole host of websites like this scrap one.

For a few months now powerful lines from two popular songs have really leapt out at me. One I love is from Maroon Five's 'She will be loved' - the lines go...

"It's not always rainbows and butterflies. It's compromise that moves us along."

And then there's "What have you done today to make you feel proud?" by Heather Small.

I got to know her song with that amazing line when it was used as the theme song for TV show The Biggest Loser. But it also became the official soundtrack for London's 2012 Olympic bid. In 2005 Heather made her US television debut performing Proud and then Oprah named it the new theme toher show. But for me it's enough to pull my socks up and get me on with that weight loss/exercise journey whenever I hear it.

So what song words or phrases inspire you?

DEAF

Elliot (age 7) is designing a comic on the computer. "Mumma, how do you spell 'deaf'?"

Me: "D...E...A...F"

Elliot: 'How do you spell 'deaf' again?"

Me: "D...E...A...F"

Elliot: "Are you sure that's right?"

Me: "Yes" - holding my hand to my ear "Deaf. D...E..A...F. Like when you can't hear anything."

Elliot: " No not that kind of deaf. I meant the deaf when your living is finished."

Me: "Ah, that kind of deaf... D...E..A..T..H"

LITTLE FAT ART BOOKS

OK just a wee plug for Karen's art swap. We need a few more people to join our merry crew. Easy peasy. Just produce 2 little art works (however you like, doesn't have to be flash - just use your scrapbooking stash). Send them to Karen and you'll get 2 original art works back. A new topic each month and over time you'll have a little pile of art works that you can bind into a book. Cool fun. And because they're so small (4"x4") they really don't take much time to create.

This month's theme is "If I were a rich man."

You can opt in and out each month so you're not tied into having to do them each month. Check out Karen's blog for details.

Come on, join us, you know you want to!

End of school holidays, week one.

Today we had an Elli-day. Miss 12 is in Nelson visiting the cousins for a few days (her first plane journey by herself!). DH is back from Melbourne so today we had an Elli-day. Basically we decided we'd do some stuff with Elliot all day.

So we slept in (OK that was for us). We went swimming with our good friends and their kids. We all went to yum cha where Elli (and all the girls) actually ate some yum cha food (not just the fries they kindly make for him), then we three went to see Fantastic Four. Which was fun - though not my normal preferred genre.

And now DH has to go back to work tomorrow - after a week off. And Miss 12 will be home tomorrow night. So I guess Monday will be another Elli-day. Just Elli and me.

SOUL MUSIC

So what music do you like?

When I'm by myself at the gym I cannot work out without music. Sometimes I'm with my trainer, or doing a class or working out with a friend and I don't bother, but when I'm by myself I stick my headphones on and kind of zone out. Most people use upbeat songs to get them going at the gym. I sometimes do. But sometimes I listen to ballads. My MP3 player gym mix includes - The Feelers (current total favourite), Queen, Yellow Card, Green Day, Norah Jones, Eric Clapton, James Blunt, Crowded House, Dave Dobbyn and Evermore- shall we say eclectic (overused word, I know, but apt).

Despite having the latest technology I confess to being a bit of a techno-phobe. I love my red MP3 player(surprise present from D) but I have to get D or Miss 12 to download my music. D is great at sneaking in the odd track he thinks I'll like. He is a bit harder rock than I am but I usually like his surprises. I think I like that he has chosen them for me.

We love it that our kids love music and get pleasure from it. Cait loves Good Charlotte. I love it when a song comes on the radio and I ask "who sings that?" and they race one another to answer. Even Elli at 7 can tell his Mika from his ELEMEN OP. His favourite band is My Chemical Romance ."I'm an emo!" he tells me!

So different from when I was a kid. My Dad only ever listened to opera!
