UNLIKELY SAVIOUR

This week we have an update to the Type 1 Diabetes story that has engulfed our family.

Mr 10 has decided he doesn't like the 'pen' injection which is a shame because instead of having to carefully draw up the precise insulin dosage (as you do with a syringue and which can be quite difficult even for an adult) the 'pen' has a dial so you always get exactly the correct doasge. Never mind, we tell Mr 10, you just have to have insulin. How you have it is your choice. He needs to retain some control.

So he chooses to continue with the twice daily shots. (Which will increase to 3-5 times a day in later months). Which is all very well and it keeps him healthy except that these shots need to be administered by DH or myself. Which means one of us has to be there every night and every morning. No more weekends away for parents. No sleep ins for one of us. That's OK, we think. Maybe in a few months he'll think about injecting himself.

Until an unlikely saviour emerges this week in the form of Miss 15. She somehow convinces Mr 10 that it would be good if she could inject him, too. And to prove she is serious she proceeds to inject her own stomach (several more times than is necessary!) to show him she can do it and to show him that she gets what it is like.

And, unbelievably, Mr 10 decides that Miss 15 is trustworthy and kind and yes she can inject him, too, from now on.

Thank you, Miss 15, for going beyond the bounds of sisterly niceness. Wonders will never cease.

Ah, God bless Miss 15:) This is fabulous! And confirms what a close and trusting sibling relationship they have.

Very sensible!
And I hope the pen may become more attractive later.

Oh Melissa, this little post just made me cry. How sweet Miss 15 is (and having my own Mr 14 I am doubly impressed.) And what a trooper E is being. You should be proud of yourself for raising such fantastic kids (OK, and proud of them too!) xx

I like that "E" has some control over how he gets the insulin. Good on "Miss 15" being able to step up to the mark and even more so that "E" is happy to let her. I am sure that in time he will switch to the pen.

That is a very kind sister. Funny that siblings can bicker and squabble, but when it comes to the crunch they can be there for each other
